Porto
An epic 12-hour journey to Portugal's second city. Raw, beautiful and completely unforgettable — a UNESCO World Heritage riverside, baroque churches, the world's most beautiful bookshop, and the finest Port wine on earth.
The Epic
Northern Journey
Porto is unlike Lisbon in every way — rougher, grittier, more dramatic. A city built on granite cliffs above the Douro River, where every alley tells a story of wine, trade and Atlantic adventure. It is Portugal's second city in size but first in the hearts of those who have been there.
This is our longest tour — 310 kilometres each way — and the most rewarding. Your guide Nikolai, licensed under RNAAT n° 512/2025, accompanies you for the full 12 hours, making every minute count. The drive through central Portugal is beautiful in itself.
Your Day
in Porto
Ribeira District — UNESCO Riverside
Arrive in Porto's legendary Ribeira neighbourhood — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the true soul of the city. Colourful 14th-century buildings in shades of terracotta, yellow and blue cascade down the granite hillside to the dark waters of the Douro. The narrow lanes are filled with the smell of grilled fish, the sound of Fado drifting from open doors, and the sight of traditional rabelo wine boats moored along the quay. Your guide brings the history of this district to life — the medieval trade, the British wine merchants, the floods that shaped Porto's identity.
Dom Luís I Bridge — Porto's Iron Icon
Walk the upper deck of Porto's most iconic landmark — a double-deck iron arch bridge spanning 172 metres across the Douro gorge, designed by Théophile Seyrig, a student of Gustave Eiffel. The views from the top are extraordinary: the entire Ribeira on one side, the terracotta rooftops of Porto climbing the hillside, and the white wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia stretching along the opposite bank. Then cross into Gaia for the Port wine cellars — Porto's other great treasure.
Porto Cathedral & São Bento Station
Climb to the Sé do Porto — a 12th-century Romanesque cathedral fortress with views over the entire city from its terrace. Then walk down to São Bento Railway Station, whose entrance hall is lined with over 20,000 hand-painted blue and white azulejo tiles depicting scenes of Portuguese history. One of the most beautiful railway stations in the world, and entirely free to visit.
Livraria Lello — The World's Most Beautiful Bookshop
Few buildings in Porto stop visitors the way Livraria Lello does. Built in 1906 in neo-Gothic style, its crimson central staircase, ornate carved woodwork and stained-glass ceiling have made it one of the most photographed interiors in Portugal — and one of the inspirations cited by J.K. Rowling for the world of Harry Potter, during her years living in Porto in the early 1990s. A ticket (~€8) is redeemable against any book purchase. Your guide helps you navigate the queues.
Port Wine Cellars — Vila Nova de Gaia
Cross back to the south bank and enter one of the historic Port wine lodges that have lined the Gaia waterfront since the 17th century. Sandeman, Graham's, Taylor's, Ferreira — these names are the history of Portuguese wine. Your guide will recommend the best cellar for your group. A guided tour (~45 minutes) takes you through the oak barrels and explains the centuries-old blending process, before a tasting of ruby, tawny and Late Bottled Vintage Port. The perfect end to the day before the drive south.
Palácio de Cristal Gardens — Sunset View
End your Porto experience in the peaceful Jardins do Palácio de Cristal — sweeping gardens above the Douro with panoramic views across the river and out to the Atlantic. On clear evenings the light here is extraordinary. A quiet, beautiful moment before the drive back to Lisbon.
